Dhaualadhars, are themselves a mountain range quite apart from any other mountain range in the Himalayas. It is the outer most part of Himalayas. The rock faces of this granite range are so sharply cut that they fail to hold snow for long as a result you see snow in the gullies and on top. During the trek we walk through some Gaddi tribal villages. Gaddi is a semi nomadic shepherd tribe whose main occupation is agriculture and rearing of sheep and goat. The gaddi shepherds spend the whole summer on the mountains and during winter come back to the plains of Kangra with their flock of sheep and goat.

Kareri Lake is a high altitude, shallow, fresh water lake south of the Dhauladhar range approximately 9 km North West of Dharamsala in Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh. Its surface is 3000 metres above the sea level. Snow melting from the Dhauladhar range serves as the source of the lake and a stream, Nyund is the outflow. Since the source is fresh melting snow and the lake is shallow, water visibility is very high and in most places, the lake bed can be seen. The new latest and shortest route for the trek starts from Salli village and one can use Snow Monk Camp as the base. Snow Monk camp offers modern washrooms and toilets and delicious meals. It makes all the sense to use it as a base for treks such as Kareri lake.

The Lake lies below the Minkiani Peak. The trek, one of the most stunning alpine treks, can also be reached following the Khauli River. The trek crosses several streams, through lush green meadows and thick forest home to numerous Himalayan birds and animal species. Lord Shiva temple overlooking the lake is a main attraction. This trek route to Kareri Lake originates from Salli village and follows Khauli River. This is a rarely visited route and is pristine free from all trekkers. One treks from Salli village to Daled Camp staying overnight at the camp. The next day’s climb takes ones over the eastern ridge and approaches the Kareri lake. It will be a full days trek descending back to Daled camp. The new latest and shortest route for the trek starts from Salli village and one can use Snow Monk Camp as the base.
