Welcome To

Community Based Sustainable Tourism

Snow Monk Camp was set up in 2012 as a permanent base camp in the Dhauladhar Himalaya close to Dharamshala offering great options for treks in the Dhauladhar Himalaya. The camp offers some of the finest trekking trails leading to Kareri Lake, Baleni Pass, Lam Dal 7 lakes, Minkiani Pass and more.

2022 - The management of Snow Monk Camp proudly announces the change in the vision of the project moving towards “Community Based Sustainable Tourism”. After 10 years of inception, Snow Monk Camp realised the need to support and handhold the local economy of the region. The camp has now chosen to partner with local partners using their homestays now as a base camp, so that the revenue flows to the local stakeholders and promotes their economy. The objectives now is to provide marketing support, capacity building, skill development, conservation and other such expertise promoting tourism development in the region. The camp now provides employment opportunities through nature-based tourism, and much-needed economic alternatives like creating homestays, training of villagers in a broad range of activities, including skill development like housekeeping, food preparation and how to guide tours.

Snow Monk Camp now promotes community based tourism programs, enabling the tourist to discover local habitats, respecting traditional cultures, rituals and heritage with a belief of fostering community-based tourism and conservation. All programs at the camp now begin from a homestay owned by a local family, adding to their economy. Most of the homestays have 3 - 8 rooms in their homes. The homestays are spread over many villages between the rivers Khauli and Nyund in the vicinity such as Kareri, Nolli, Salli, Kanol, Kutharna. Most of the homestay rooms offer all necessary basic comforts like proper beds, pillows, blankets, electricity, charging points etc. The common toilets are modern western with bathrooms having hot water provided by solar geysers. The overall experience is heightened by the delicious home cooked style food that is freshly cooked and served camping style.

Our programs offer many engaging activities in adventure, culture, creativity and community service. Snow Monk Camp has partnered with the local village panchayat and there are ongoing projects throughout the year which makes it our USP offering curated CAS trips for IB schools. Being an approved TAP trained activity provider for the Duke of Edinburgh awards program, we offer treks and expeditions for bronze, silver & gold levels.
